Ferdinand Place

Leverton & Sons Funeral Directors is a successful family-run local business with strong attachments to the area. It has provided essential services to the community for well over 200 years and fully intends to prosper and grow with the local community into the future.

The present operation is located in Ferdinand Place, a quiet cul-de-sac in Camden off Chalk Farm Road for almost 50 years. However, its out-dated facilities have become inappropriate for the needs of the organisation, staff and clients and re-development will allow them to safeguard their long-term investment in local community employment by relocating to a new state-of-the-art facility on the same site.

The proposal demolishes 2 existing light-industrial premises on separate adjacent sites and combines the functions in a single new co-located facility. To fund this process 19 new homes are constructed in a 4 and 5-storey residential development providing around 1,620 m2 of high quality residential space and 945 m2 of employment use.

Architectural treatment references the mixed light industrial and residential heritage of the immediate context with twin blocks echoing pale blue and red brick finishes of neighbouring ‘warehouse’ forms. The taller mass of block A is used to create an interesting terminal view through the use of a careful asymmetry alluding to the continuity of the street beyond the corner. At upper levels, the simple mass is articulated in three dimensions to sculpt a sense of focus and enclosure to Ferdinand Place. Corners are “eroded” with balcony setbacks allowing light into the street and providing overlooking views to encourage interaction with the life of the street and to articulate a sense of place.
